There was a businessman who always tried to pay as little as possible for what he needed. One day he fell ill. He decided to go to a doctor and asked a friend to recommend one.

“Dr Smith is a good one,” the friend told him.

“Is he expensive?” the businessman asked.

“Yes and no. He charges fifty dollars for the first visit, but only twenty-five dollars for each visit after that.”

“That seems reasonable,” the business man said, and went to visit Dr Smith.

As he walked into the consulting-room, he said, “Well, here I am AGAIN,” and put twenty-five dollars on the table.

The doctor looked at him carefully for a moment, then smiled and put the money into the drawer of his desk. “Thank you,” he said. “And what can I do for you today?”

“Examine me, of course,” the businessman said, “and tell me what’s wrong with me.”

“Oh, there’s no need for me to examine you AGAIN,” the doctor said. “Just continue taking the medicine I prescribed for you when you came to me last time.”

16. What happened to the businessman one day?

A. He was asked to pay 50 dollars to a doctor.

B. He got sick and had to see a doctor.

C. He failed in his business.

D. He lost a lot of money.

The pine tree(松树)is a special kind of tree. Some people call the pine tree a Christmas tree. This is because many people put pine trees in their homes at Christmas time. They decorate the tree with colored lights, and put Christmas presents under the tree.

Pine trees are different from other trees because most other trees lose their leaves in winter. Pine trees stay green all year long, even in winter. Pine trees are also called evergreens because they are always green.

Pine trees do not have soft leaves like the maple trees. They have hard, thin leaves called needles. Pine trees also have pine cones(松果). Cones look like hard berries. If you walk in a forest, you will see many pine cones on the ground. Inside the pine cones are seeds. When the seeds fall to the ground, a new tree starts to grow.

Pine trees are valuable for many reasons. The wood is used to make furniture and boats. Many kinds of birds build their nests in pine trees. The seeds of pine trees are food for small animals such as squirrels and mice and for bigger animals such as rabbits and black bears. The needles are good food for large animals such as deer and moose when they cannot find anything to eat in winter.

If you walk in a forest of pine trees, the air has a wonderful smell. In winter, the white snow on the dark green trees looks very beautiful.

19. Another name for a pine tree is _____.

A. a Christmas tree B. a maple tree

C. a green tree D. a beautiful tree

C.

Sometimes I think that the most difficult job in the world is being a teacher. Preparing a good lesson is hard but the biggest problems for teachers are …people! Yes, people! We have to please the school leaders, the parents and, of course, you, the students.

Everyone wants good scores and it’s the teacher’s job to make sure that every student gets the best score he can. If there is a bad score, the school leaders, the parents, and even the student think the teacher is responsible. I think that’s unfair but that’s part of the job.

So, what is the good part of being a teacher? Well… people! There is nothing more satisfying than to see students improve. To see young people learning, growing, becoming more confident. I always feel proud when I hear my students speaking English. And I feel very proud when someone thanks me and says that I helped them to improve their English.

This Teacher’s Day I want you to make your teachers happy by remembering these three words: participate, cooperate, and appreciate. “Participate” means that you “take part” in the class by listening closely and asking questions. “Cooperate” means that you behave well and do the things the teacher asks you to do. And “appreciate” means that you say “Thank you” once in a while for all your teacher’s hard work, help and kindness.

If you do those three things, you will make your teachers feel that the world’s “most difficult” job is really the world’s most rewarding job.

23. Which could be the best title of the passage?

A. The responsibilities of a teacher.

B. How to be a good teacher?

C. Teaching -- the most difficult and rewarding job in the world.

D. School leaders are difficult to please.

24. What makes a teacher’s job seemingly the most difficult one in the world?

A. To prepare a good lesson.

B. To see the students improve.

C. To give students good scores.

D. To be responsible for students’ scores.

25. What does the underlined word appreciate in paragraph 4 most probably mean?

A. work hard B. tell the truth C. be grateful D. help each other

26. According to the author’s suggestion, a student should NOT ______ if he wants to make his teachers happy.

A. blame his teacher for his own bad scores B. finish an oral assignment on time

C. keep quiet while the teacher is speaking D. say "Thank you" to his teacher.
