The moment Dana stood up from her seat, the crowd at the airport rushed forward. The passengers had been waiting for a couple of hours for an airline employee to open the door leading to the plane outside. And no one was in a good mood. While the crowd was moving, an old man got trapped in the middle of the rush. He fell down without being able to break his fall. His head hit the concrete floor. Blood flooded from his forehead. He appeared to be unconscious. Everyone rushed past him, except for Dana. She called for help.

A minute later, a young airline employee showed up. Hardly looking at the old man, she told Dana to get aboard her plane. She said the old man would be okay, and walked away.

Dana screamed for help. An airport supervisor (管理人员) appeared. He also told Dana to get on the plane. Dana said that she was not moving until an ambulance arrived. The supervisor said her plane would leave without her. Dana said that she didn’t care.

An ambulance and two nurses finally arrived. The nurses said that the man would be okay, but he would need some treatment. They put him into the ambulance and drove off.

On her way out to the plane, which was still refueling, Dana saw the employee who had firstly ignored the old man. The employee said, “You’re lucky the plane didn't leave without you.”

It’s never too early to become?money savvy. That’s what British?personal finances expert Martin Lewis thinks. The Origin of Christmas

Since about 400 AD, Christmas day has been celebrated on 25th December. This date was the old mid-winter festival in pre-Christian times, around the time of the longest night and the shortest day. Christmas in the 21st century has many traditions: Christmas presents, trees, cards, etc.

Presents and shopping

Shops can make about 60 per cent of their year’s income in the three months before Christmas. So most shops get ready for it in October. The shopping centres are beautifully decorated and stay open late at night. The first time this happened was in 1867 when Macy’s, a famous shop in new York, stayed open until midnight on Christmas Eve (24th December).

Trees

By mid-December, almost every house, shop and street has a Christmas tree. This tradition was started by the Germans as early as 700 AD. In the northern countries of the world, winter is cold and dark and most trees lose their leaves. The beautiful green trees decorated with lights and coloured glass balls give people hope that spring will come again.

Cards

The tradition of sending cards to friends was started in 1840 in the UK and now millions of Christmas cards and emails are sent all round the world. Cards are a good way of keeping in touch with family and friends who live far away.

Father Christmas

Father Christmas is known across the world with his white hair, red coat and big bags of toys. Young children are told that he lives in the north of Finland and makes toys for them. By tradition, he brings the toys to children at midnight, on the night before Christmas.

Food

On Christmas day a traditional meal is eaten, usually turkey and a rich, spicy cake. Some people hate Christmas. Others feel it is a magical and exciting time. They love seeing family and friends; they also love the traditions. Love it or hate it, Christmas is a time to look back over the old year — and forward to the new one.

Byron Court, a school in north-west London, gets high marks for integration(融合). No fewer than 42 languages are spoken in the playground. The 600 pupils from places as far apart as Iraq, the Philippines, Somalia, India, Romania and Slovakia?study and play together.

Many of these children spoke no English at all when they arrived in the UK aged five to eight years old. But they learn quickly. Martine Clark, the school’s executive?head teacher, believes that unity is very important. She says: “It’s important there’s no?difference?between any languages or any culture. We do that by celebrating?the diversity of the culture in our school. The children that come to Byron Court are?adaptable(能适应新环境的). Having such a variety of backgrounds makes them better learners. Some have struggled, not always understanding instructions in the classroom. But after a few years, many have turned the disadvantage of not speaking English into the advantage of being bilingual (双语的).”

However,?educational standards?can suffer when not everyone speaks the same language, at least to begin with. Though according to Martyn Pendergast, an education officer at Brent Council, this doesn’t last for long: “It takes time to learn English and in Brent our children perform just below the national average
