Each day, a train would come and the bridge would be turned sideways across the river, allowing the train to cross it. A man sat in a small room on one side of the river where he operated (操作) the controls to turn the bridge and lock it into place when a train came. ? One evening, when the man saw the train lights, he stepped to the controls and tried to turn the bridge into position, but, to his surprise, he found the locking control did not work. If the bridge was not safe in position, it would move back and forth at the ends, causing the train to jump the track and go crashing into the river. The man hurried across the bridge to the other side of the river where there was a locking lever (操纵杆) that he could operate by hand. Suddenly, he heard a sound from the direction of his room, “Daddy, where are you?”?? His four-year-old son was crossing the bridge to look for him. If he took the boy away from the bridge first, he couldn’t get back to the lever in time. But if he didn’t, the boy would be killed by the train. Either the people on the train or his little son must die…?? The train passed safely and no one on the train saw the small broken body that was thrown into the river by the train. Nor did they see the man who was still holding the locking lever. 21.What happened one evening when the train came? A.The man didn’t see the train coming. B.The man found the locking control didn’t work. C.The man was playing with his son on the bridge. D.The bridge was broken. 22.What can we infer from the passage? A.There was something wrong with the lock control of the bridge. B.The train passed the bridge safely at last. C.The father gave up his son for the safety of people on the train. D.There was a locking lever on the other side of the river. 23.What’s the best title of the passage? A.A Sad Story B.A Poor Boy C.A Lucky Train D.A Great Father B They crossed in front of me as I was driving out of the store parking lot. At first I was angry at being delayed (耽搁) for a whole ten seconds. I quickly became patient when I realized that this was an elderly couple. The man leaned (倚靠) on his wife who walked in front of him. He not only used her for support but it was obvious that he was blind. The two of them worked as one—each needing the other to function in this fast-changing world. That little example of true strength changed my whole personal understanding of life that day. Suddenly I wasn’t so mad about having to work a few extra hours on Sundays. I had my strength, and I was still relatively young. That picture of those two elderly people walking with dignity and strength stayed with me the entire week. My life wasn’t so bad after all. I had my health and a good job. I had a wonderful, supportive wife. I started to think --- not only was I lucky to have it all, but so was that wonderful old couple, who, despite the trials and sufferings of a long life, still had the love and support of each other to carry them through this world. There are so many people out there just like that couple. My wife and I sometimes picture ourselves in our old age, walking arm-in-arm into the sunset. That image always gives us a warm feeling of comfort. Just remember, none of us would be here if it wasn’t for our elders. We should all have extra time and patience when it comes to helping our elder friends. 24.When the author was about to drive away, the couple ______. A.entered the store B.hit his car C.got in his way D.asked him for help 25.After he saw the couple, the author would ______. A.drive at a low speed B.never think of his wife C.be impatient to the end D.spend less time complaining 26.What did the author think of the couple? A.They lived a happier life than he. B.Their lasting love was highly thought of. C.They didn’t live a life without hardships. D.They won respect by walking together. 27.What would be the best title for this passage? A.Spend an Extra Minute B.Stay with Your Wife C.Be Careful When Driving D.Respect the old, Please C You either have it, or you don’t --- a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street? Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it. “Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, Research Director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.” Jim Marland also said that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions: · If you are using a map, turn it so it relates to the way you are facing. · If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on the route (路线) as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route. · Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or walls in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are. 28.Scientists believe that ________. some babies are born with a sense of direction people learn a sense of direction as they grow older people never lose their sense of direction everybody has a sense of direction from birth 29.What is true of seven-year-old children according to the passage? A.They never have a sense of direction without maps. B.They should never be allowed out alone if they don’t have a sense of direction. C.They have a sense of direction and can find their way around. D.They can develop a good sense of direction if they are driven around in a car. 30. If you leave your bike in a strange place, you should ______. A.tie it to a tree so as to prevent it from being stolen B.draw a map of the route to help remember where it is C.not take the same route when you come back to it D.remember something easily recognizable on the route 31. According to the passage, the best way to find your way around is to ______. A.ask policemen for directions B.use walls, streams, and streets to guide yourself C.remember your route by looking out for steps and stairs D.count the number of landmarks that you see What is the main idea of this passage?
