My friend Wallace may be one of the luckiest among the countless Chinese who came to the US to study in the early 2000s. It looks like he may have broken the Guinness record for his speed in realizing the American dream.

Graduating from University of Chicago five years ago with a PhD in computer science, he immediately got a job at an investment company despite the financial crisis. His boss offered him a six-figure salary and finally helped him for a green card. He now lives with his beautiful wife, three-year-old son, some pets and two cars in a newly purchased beach house on Long Island.

Ten years ago, we all came to America to escape the fixed life in a Chinese work unit. With a perfect legal system, transparent government operations, separated neighborhoods and the distance people keep from one another, America has attracted us with new challenges on a daily basis.
