So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for children that which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that “reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible”.

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also public activity. It can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny.

If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable ,what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest(探索)for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. “Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children.”

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of leaning to read by reading.

  D. teachers can make their teaching activities observable

3.The underlined word “scrutiny” most probably means“___________”.

  A. inquiry B. observation

依据文章第一自然段第3行“It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading..”(教学生如何阅读当然不是带着学生花费大量的时间去一点一点地读)。

依据文章第二自然段第2行开始的句子:“The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read”(教学的任务是为学生能够找出自己最有效的自学阅读的方法创造条件和氛围),B项符合上述意思,为正确答案。

3.B。 该词出现在第三自然段最后一句“process is not open to public scrutiny”,考生可从该句的上文作出推测。最明显的提示出现在第二自然段最后一句“Teaching is also a public activity;it can be seen and observed”所以,scrutiny最可能的词义应该是observation,故B项正确。

4.A。 依据文章第四自然段、第五自然段所提供的信息,特别是第5段第3行“Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading”(当教师们创造了一种环境,使孩子们有机会自己通过阅读解决所遇到的问题时,学习阅读就变得容易多了),可以看出A项与之最为相近。

5.C。 依据文章第一自然段第4行“reading cannot be taught directly and…”

Motherhood may make women smarter and may help prevent dementia(痴呆) in old age by bathing the brain in protective hormones(荷尔蒙) , U.S. researchers reported on Thursday.

Tests on rats show that those who raise two or more litters of pups do considerably better in tests of memory and skills than rats who have no babies, and their brains show changes that suggest they may be protected against diseases such as Alzheimer’s(早老痴呆症). University of Richmond psychology professor Craig Kinsley believes his findings will translate into humans.

“Our research shows that the hormones of pregnancy(怀孕) are protecting the brain, including estrogen(雌激素), which we know has many neuroprotective (保护神经的) effects,” Kinsley said.

“It’s rat data but humans are mammals just like these animals are mammals,” he added in a telephone interview. “They go through pregnancy and hormonal changes.” Kinsley said he hoped public health officials and researchers will look to see if having had children protects a woman from Alzheimer’s and other forms of age-related brain decline.

“When people think about pregnancy, they think about what happens to babies and the mother from the neck down,” said Kinsley, who presented his findings to the annual meeting of the Society of Neuroscience in Orlando, Florida.

“They do not realize that hormones are washing on the brain. If you look at female animals who have never gone through pregnancy, they act differently toward young. But if she goes through pregnancy, she will sacrifice her life for her infant — that is a great change in her behavior that showed in genetic alterations(改变) to the brain.”

1. How do scientists know “Motherhood may make women smarter”?

A. Some researchers have told them.

B. Many women say so.

C. They know it by experimenting on rats.

D. They know it through their own experience.

2. What does the phrase “litters of pups” mean in the second paragraph?

A. Baby rats. B. Animals.

C. Old rats. D. Grown-up rats.

3. What can protect the brain of a woman according to the passage?

A. Estrogen. B. The hormones of pregnancy.

C. More exercise. D. Taking care of children.

4. “It’s rat data but humans are mammals just like these animals are mammals.” What does the sentence suggest?

A. The experiments on the rats have nothing to do with humans.

B. The experiments on the rats are very important for animals.

C. The experiments on the rats are much the same on humans.

D. The experiments on the rats are much the same on other animals.

5. Which title is the best for this passage?

A. Do You Want to Be Smarter? B. Motherhood Makes Women Smarter

C. Mysterious Hormones D. An Important Study

1. C。 根据Tests on rats show…

2. A。 后面的对比who have no babies,实际上提供了一个相反的情况,所以我们可以推测those who raise two or more litters of pups中的litters of pups指的是“刚出生不久的小老鼠”。

3. B。 根据文章第 3 段中的 …the hormones of pregnancy(怀孕) are protecting the brain可得出答案。

Motherhood may make women smarter
