A first officer(副机长) and relief pilot(后备飞行员) safely landed a Continental Airlines Inc. jetliner Thursday at New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport, hours after the pilot of the Boeing 777 died midflight en route from Brussels.

The 60-year-old pilot, a 32-year Continental veteran based in Newark, is believed to have died of natural causes, the airline said. The flight, which had departed at 9:54 a. m. local time in Belgium, carried 247 passengers, 12 flight attendants and the three pilots.

People on the plane said the captain fell ill and a relief pilot took the controls as the airplane was over the North Atlantic and approaching the coast of Canada.

To ensure flight safety in the event a pilot becomes incapacitated (丧失能力), Federal Aviation Administration(联邦航空局) rules require any flight longer than eight hours to carry a relief pilot in addition to the airplane’s captain and first officer, who also is trained to command the cockpit(驾驶员座舱). Flights over 12 hours are required to carry two relief pilots.

Because events were confined to the cockpit, other passengers had no idea anything serious had happened until the plane touched down in New Jersey at 11:49 a. m., 11 minutes ahead of schedule. Despite the crew’s call for a doctor, several passengers said, there were no other unusual signs until the plane was met by firetrucks and other emergency vehicles when it landed.

“We thought there was some sort of emergency drill(应急演练) happening,” said Laura McDermott, a New Jersey citizen traveling with her husband and two children.

Some passengers said they were relieved the crew didn’t mention the pilot’s death while in the air. “It was probably better that way,” said Susan Morgan, a passenger from Houston. “People would have panicked if they had told us.”

A good pilot possesses a combination of many qualities: he must have good flying skills and a high degree of proficiency. He should be focused and aware all the time, self-disciplined and consistent in applying good judgment. In the case of Boeing 777 accident, passengers were saved due to both responsible relief pilots and the smart aviation rules. That is, whatever risks they are, there are ways to minimize(最小化) the chances by standard regulations and strictly carrying them out.

21. According to the Federal Aviation Administration rules, .

A. any flight should have at least two pilots

B. flights flying 13 hours should have two relief pilots

C. flights less than 8 hours need to carry one relief pilot

D. all flights should not fly more than 8 hours without a break

22. What does the underlined word “panicked” mean?

A. Relaxed. B. Hurried. C. Scared. D. Excited.

23. What qualities should a good pilot possess?

A. Good flying skills. B. A high degree of proficiency.

C. Good judgment. D. All of the above.

24. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. An Airplane Accident That Almost Happened

B. A Pilot Who Died on the Plane

C. A Relief Pilot Who Saved the Whole Plane

D. How to Become a Pilot

Nowadays, the selfie stick(自拍杆) has become so common. Yet it was once considered so unnecessary that it was included in the book of 101 Useless Japanese Inventions—along with dust slippers for cats and the bath body suit (for taking a bath without getting wet).

An early selfie stick, perhaps the first, was invented in the 1980s by Hiroshi Ueda, a Japanese engineer and photographer. “Whenever I went overseas I took my camera with me and took loads of photos.” he says. But while travelling in Europe he encountered a problem. He was fond to get pictures of himself and his wife together—but passers-by couldn’t always be trusted. A kid once took his camera and fled away. It was a problem crying out for a solution, so Ueda was well-placed to find one. He invented an extendable stick(伸长杆), and it was patented(申请专利) in 1983 but, to Ueda’s disappointment, it was not a commercial success.

But the Canadian toy inventor Wayne Fromm believes there’s just one reason the selfie stick has become so popular: his own hard work.

He invented a hand-held extendable selfie stick in the early 2000s. He was unaware of Ueda’s earlier design, though he too came up with the idea during a European holiday.

He’s spent the past decade promoting his invention at trade fairs(商交会), on the TV shopping channel and on TV shows like Dragon’s Den. “It was a 10-year ‘overnight’ success.” He says.

Fromm disclosed Ueda’s extender in his patent(专利书) as “prior(先前的) art”, but he believes the current selfie stick craze is a direct result of his own model. “It’s I who invented what we call today’s selfie stick,” he insists.

Fromm’s product, unlike Ueda’s, has sold well. Besides, says Fromm, for inventors like him and Ueda it’s not all about the money. “It’s that you’re actually creating something fun or useful or helpful for people. So I’m happy that the world has embraced the selfie stick.”

Maybe in the near future, you won’t have to bring y
