A Of course, she wasn’t really my aunt and, out of fear, I never called her that to her face. I only referred to her as “My Aunt Fannie” because the name always made my father laugh quietly and gave my mother cause to look strictly at both of us---at me for being disrespectful (失礼的) of my elder and at my father for encouraging my bad behavior. I enjoyed both reactions so I looked for every opportunity to work the name into as many conversations as possible. As a young woman, my mother had worked in the kitchen of a large Victorian farmhouse. During those years my mother helped Aunt Fanny make the best blueberry jam (蓝莓酱) ever tasted by anyone in Glenfield. She was well-known for her jam and for never sharing the recipe with others. Even though my mother knew the recipe by heart, as long as Aunt Fannie was alive, she never made the jam without Aunt Fannie in our kitchen to direct the process and preserve the secret. Each August, my mother would prepare me for Aunt Fannie’s visit. One year, after I had helped with the jam process, Aunt Fannie gave me a coin and then made me promise that I would never spend it. “Hold onto this coin,” she said, “and someday you will be rich. I still have my very first coin, given to me by my grandmother.” So I kept the coin in a small box and waited to become rich. I now have the blueberry jam recipe and the coin from Aunt Fannie. In people’s eyes Aunt Fannie’s success resulted from that secret recipe. But to me, it was just a common recipe. Neither have they significantly made me become a rich person, but I keep them as reminders to hold onto the valuable things in life. Money can make you feel rich for a while, but it is the relationships and the memories of time spent with friends and family that truly leave you wealthy. And that is a fortune that anyone can build. 1. Why did the author always use the name “My Aunt Fannie” in conversations? A. She was frightened of Aunt Fannie. B. She liked Aunt Fannie’s recipe. C. Our main activity for March is our Walk for the Woods fundraising events on Saturday, 17th March, starting any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. We will be walking the distance between Warley Woods and Tipperary. It is indeed a long way---80 miles. The more people that you can get sponsor you, the more money we can raise to help look after our beautiful woodland. More information is available at our website. The Sunday volunteers planted two beeches (山毛榉) and an oak (橡树) last week. This was thanks to the money from the Big Tree Plant and to Lisa and Gordon Whitiker, whose friends gave money for the big trees instead of for their wedding presents. Thanks to everyone who took part. There were 15 volunteers at the Oral History Training Day which was led by Julia Letts. The group will be meeting again and will start to interview the local people who have offered to tell their stories. We are happy to hear from others who would like to be interviewed about their memories of the Woods for the project. If you or anyone you know is interested, please call Viv Cole at the office. This project is financed by Heritage Lottery Fund. There was a huge response to the Forest Schools activities held at half term. These will be held again during the Easter holidays on the following dates: 4th April from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for over 8s. On 12th April from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, there will be a Teddy Bears’ Picnic for the under 8s. All these must be booked in advance. The passage is probably taken from ______. A. an advertisement B. a magazine【来源:全,品…中&高*考+网】 C. a community brochure D. an official report C A colleague of mine lives in the same street as me. He drives to work every day while I cycle the same distance almost every day. Imagine my surprise when I cycled to work one day, went for a shower in the sports centre and saw my neighbour in the gym on the cycling machine after driving to work! I don’t see the logic. It would be much easier to cycle to work so that you have some exercise every day as part of your daily routine. I wanted to persuade them to cycle to work, so I did some research on a few websites about the benefits of cycling to work. Cycling has some obvious advantages over driving. It is cheaper, it is better for the environment, and you don’t have to find a parking space. The point about the parking space is an important one as car parks are often full. I know that my colleague sometimes makes a 15-minute car journey to work and then spends 30 minutes looking for a parking space! It is true that cycling is a little slower than going by car, but at rush hours, it doesn’t make much difference. The time it takes to cycle is generally easier to predict than the time it takes to drive. The reason for this is that when there is heavy traffic, people on bicycles can get past, while people in cars have to wait. There are clear health benefits to cycling, even if you only cycle a short distance each day. According to one expert, if you cycle regularly you should be as fit as a person 10 years younger. Well, I am 47 and I still play football in a team so I would say that this claim is true. As well as being good for your health, I think cycling can reduce stress. I certainly find that I feel better when I arrive at work than I do when I leave home; and I feel better when I get home than I do when I leave work. I also find that when I can’t solve a problem at work, the answer often comes to me when I am cycling. Cycling relaxes the mind. I am going to say to my colleagues “two wheels good, four wheels bad” every day until they get on their bikes! 8. The author gives the example of his neighbour to show ______. A. that it’s not logical to drive to work B. how surprised he was about driving to work C. that cycling is good for one’s health D. that cycling is a good daily exercise 9. Compared with driving, cycling has the following advantages except that ______. A. it is cheaper B. it’s better for the environment C. it doesn’t need a parking space D. its time is easier to predict 10. The author feels better after cycling because it can ______. A. make a person fit B. make a person’s stress reduced C. make a person younger D. make a person friendly 11. What does “two wheels good, four wheels bad” mean in the last paragraph? A. A car with two wheels is better than a car with four wheels. B. A bicycle with two wheels is better than a bicycle with four wheels. C. A bicycle is much cheaper than a car. D. Cycling is better for your health than a car. D A few months ago, I was picking up the children at school. Emily, another mother that I knew well, rushed up to me. She was filled with anger. “Do you know what you and I are?” she demanded. Before I could answer, she gave out the reason for her question. She had just returned from renewing her driver’s license at a government office. Asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation, Emily hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. “What I mean is,” explained the woman, “do you have a job, or are you just a ...?” “Of course I have a job,” answered Emily. “I’m a mother.” “We don’t list ‘mother’ as an occupation ... ‘housewife’ covers it,” said the recorder emphatically (强调地). I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation. This time it was at our own Town Hall. The clerk was a woman. “And what is your occupation?” she asked. What made me say it, I do not know. The words simply jumped out. “I’m ... a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.” The clerk paused, her ball-point pen frozen in mid air, and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly. “Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “just what you do in your field?” Coolly, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research in the laboratory and in the field. I’m working for my masters (the whole family) and already have four credits (all daughters). I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most jobs and the rewards are in satisfaction rather than just money.” There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk’s voice as she completed the fo | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
