Listed here are four of the thousands of impressive museums around the world.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Bilbao, Spain

Built in 1997, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is one of the newest in the world. It has transformed the industrial city of Bilbao into a traveler’s desired destination. The beautiful architecture of the museum has provided a dramatic background for movies and commercials.

The Louvre in Paris, France

Probably the most famous Louvre also holds the most famous painting in the world, the “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinci. Crowds can be found any day surrounding the small, but mysterious painting of the smiling woman. But, the Louvre is much more than a home to the “Mona Lisa”. The Louvre is visited by more people each year than any other museum in the world.

The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, America

Just opened in its new downtown location in 2012, the Barnes Foundation is unique in that it is a completely reproduced display from one man’s private collection. Dr. Albert C. Barnes started collecting art in the early 20th century and collected, among others, the largest number of original Renoir paintings in the world.

The Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy

Walking on the marbled floors feels like stepping back in time. The building itself is a beautiful palace-like structure with frescoes (湿壁画) decorating the ceilings and walls. Viewers are bowled over (印象深刻) by the works by Botticelli, such as “The Birth of Venus”. Classic artworks from nearly 1, 000 years ago describe religious events of the time.

Mom wanted only one thing for her birthday. “Can you find me another copy of this song?” she asked, and handed me a worn-out cassette tape. I knew exactly what was recorded on it: My Redeemer(救世主). I heard the song played at least a thousand times while growing up. After so many years, the cassette tape was too worn out to be used. I promised her I would find a replacement.[]

My Redeemer became Mom’s favorite song after my younger brother Tim was killed by a drunk driver in 1973. The only thing that helped her calm down was the soulful sound of My Redeemer from the local radio station.

We recorded it on a cassette tape so she could listen to it any time she wanted but none of us knew who the soloist(独唱者) was. These days, I thought the song would be easy to find out. I went home and searched the Internet. Several songs with that title popped up, but none of them was the one Mom loved. I got frustrated.]

Mom’s birthday drew near and then one day, I was driving home, listening to our local radio station. A familiar tune came on. It was My Redeemer! As soon as I could, I phoned the station. I got a line on the soloist, who was called Alan Parks. I typed his name into Google and found his home number in South Carolina. Minutes later, I was telling him how much his recording meant to Mom. He offered to ship two CDs out to me personally. I gave him my address.

“Red Lion, Pennsylvania?” he said. “Do you know the Logans?” “They are our neighbors!” “I’ve been friends with them for 25 years,” Alan said. “They’ll be at my concert at York Gospel Chapel on April 17th. Would you and your mom come too?” We sure would. Mom was excited to hear Alan sing My Redeemer to her, live in concert—on the evening of her 87th birthday.

24. Why was the song My Redeemer so important to the author’s mother?

A. It could comfort her sad and painful mood.

B. It reminded her of the love from her husband.

C. It was given to her by a very important friend.

D. It was the only thing that the author’s brother left her.

25. What does the underlined part “got a line on” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. Talked happily with. B. Thought a lot about.

C. Made request of. D. Got information about.

26. What can we learn about Alan Parks from this passage?

A. He lived in Red Lion, Pennsylvania.

B. He is a kind and warm-hearted musician.

C. He offered to give the author two cassette tapes.

D. He would sing for the author’s mom on the radio station.

27. Which of the following is most surprising?

A. Alan Parks and the author lived in the same neighborhood.

B. Alan Parks happened to get to know the author’s mother.

C. The author’s mother went to the concert on her birthday.

D. The author’s mother became good friends with Alan Parks.

Warm weather brought by El Nino has had mixed effects on animals in usually snowy places in North America, including New England, according to an Associated Press article.

Some animals seem to benefit from having a chance to gather more food before winter, and from expending less energy in daily survival mode. Others, like snowshoe hares, are put at center stage in predators’(捕食者) view when they lack snow for disguising their white fur — not a god thing for them, of course.

Black bears, on the other hand, have been keeping busy gathering nuts and apples, when they would normally have settled into their winter homes by now. Vermont and Massachusetts officials have asked residents to wait till snow falls to take out their bird feeders for the sake of safety, the article said.

“We suggest waiting for 6 or more inches of snow that lasts before taking out your bird feeders, especially if you have been visited in the past by bears or if there are sightings of bears in your neighborhood,” Forrest Hammond, Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s bear biologist, said in the article. “Due to lack of snow and frozen ground, birds are able to seek food in fields and forests for their natural foods.”

Snow amounts can also determine how comfortable bears are and how quickly they consume their accumulated fat during hibernation(冬眠), noted Hammond in the article. This is because snow covers and traps them in their winter homes, and also hides them from predators.

28. What may upset snowshoe hares because of El Nino?[]

A. Their being caught more easily.

B. Their failing to gather more food.

C. Their consuming more energy.

D. Their losing sight of their enemies.

29. Why did the officials ask people to keep bird feeders until snow falls?

A. They many disturb bears.

B. There’s no need to do so.

C. To avoid attracting bears.[]

D. For the safety of bears.

30. What do the bear biologist’s words imply?

A. A heavy snow is on the way.

B. Bears are common nowadays.

C. Bears live mainly on birds in winter.

D. Warm weather benefits birds in winter.

31. Which of the following is the proper title for the passage?

A. Warm Weather Helps Animals Survive

B. Snow Amounts Determine Animals’ Winter Life

C. Measures Should Be Taken To Protect Wildlife

D. Lack of Snow Affects North American Animals

D

A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question accompanied by that gesture. A new finding suggests that parents, social workers, psychologists and lawyers should be careful with their hands as well as their words.

While memories of both adults and children are easy to react to suggestion, those of children are known to be particularly influenced, said lead researcher Sara Broaders of Northwestern University. Kids are used to looking to adults to tell events for them and can be misled even if not intentionally.

Previous research, for example, has shown that detail-loaded questions often cause false answers; when asked, say “Did you drink juice at the picnic?” the child is likely to say “yes” even if no juice had been available. It is not that the child is consciously lying, but rather the detail is quickly formed into his or her memory.

To avoid this problem, social workers have long been advised to ask children only open-ended questions, such as “What did you have at the picnic?” But an open-ended question paired with a gesture, briefly meaning a juice box, is treated like a detailed question. That is, children become likely to answer falsely.

And it isn’t just a few kids: 77% of children gave at least one piece of false information when a detail was suggested by an ordinary gesture. Gestures may also become more popular when talking with non-fluent language users, such as little kids, Broaders said as hand movements can impart meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases. “It certainly seems reasonable that adults would gesture more with children.”

In general, Broaders advises parents and other adults to “try to be aware of your hands when questioning a child about an event. Otherwise, you might be getting answers that don’t reflect what actually happened.”

32. According to the text, gestures __________.

A. have not any function at all

B. are rarely used by people

C. have certain effect on children

D. are often used by social workers

33. Why are kids easy to be misled by gestures according to Sara Broaders?

A. These gestures are very attractive.

B. Their memories are affected easily.

C. Children are easy to tell lies.

D. these gestures are used frequently.

34. According to the text, which of the following questions may cause a wrong reply?

A. What will you have for lunch?

B. Did you cheat in the last English examination?

C. Where are you going Lucy?[]

D. Did you see anything else last night?

35. The underlined word “impart” in Paragraph 6 means ________.
