Coffee is one of the most popular drinks around the world. There are many different types of coffee and experts think that there are more flavors of coffee than there are of wine. Coffee contains caffeine, something that raises our awareness, keeps us from failing asleep or simply gives us a kick in the morning or after lunch.

Food experts, however, are still undecided on how healthy coffee is. For a long time doctors have told people not to drink too much coffee, because it may lead to heart problems, high blood pressure, and headaches.

Scientists have now found out that it is the quality of coffee and the way it is made that hold the key to our health. Elderly people on the Greek island of Ikaria live longer than normal. Among other things, this is linked to the consumption of a strong coffee. Experts also point out that different roasts and types of coffee beans have different effects on our health. Milk and sugar change the different levels of caffeine in a cup of coffee.

A new study by a Harvard research group says that there is no link between coffee and health problems. Drinking several cups of strong coffee a day is not connected with early death or other heart diseases.

Coffee has many advantages, as the new study suggests. While alcohol makes people sleepy and slow moving, coffee gives them energy. Getting together for a cup of coffee is also a form of socializing and has a positive effect on relationships.

Although a lot still needs to be uncovered about coffee, it seems to reduce the risk of cancer and diabetes (糖尿病). Reports show that people who drink coffee may develop Parkinson’s disease later in life, or maybe not at all. Doctors think that coffee may have a positive effect on our brain.

Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving (铺砌) a road can lead to less useable fresh water. A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.

Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages (短缺).Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts (干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs.

Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In the United States, a family of four can use 1.5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there's a lot we can do to lower the number.

You can take steps to save water in your home. To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day. Wash it only once a day. Run your dishwasher (洗碗机) only when it is full. Help your parents fix any leaks in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away.

8.Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?

A. Using river water. B. Paving parking lots.

C. Throwing batteries away. D. Throwing rubbish into lakes.

9.What can be inferred from the text?

A.It takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs.

B.All water shortages are due to human behavior.[:,]

C.There is much we can do to reduce family size.

D.The average family in America makes proper use of water.

10.The last paragraph is intended to ________.

A. show us how to fix leaks at home B. tell us how to run a dishwasher

C. suggest what we do to save water at home D. prove what drinking glass is best for us

11.The text is mainly about ________.

A. why paving roads reduces our water

B. how human activity affects our water supply

C. why droughts occur more in dry climates

D. how much we depend on water to live

“Are the volcanoes in Yellowstone National Park going to erupt anytime soon? Will the world end if it does?” People across the world have been keeping a close watch on the famous national park.

Yellowstone National Park assured (保证) guests and the public on Thursday that a super-volcano under the park was not expected to erupt anytime soon, despite a video that claimed bison (野牛) had been seen fleeing to avoid such a disaster.

Yellowstone officials, who received dozens of calls and emails since the video went online this week following an earthquake in the park, said the video actually shows bison rushing down a paved road that leads deeper into the park.

“It was a spring-like day and they were crazy. Contrary to online reports, it’s a natural happening and not the end of the world,” park spokeswoman Ms. Green said.

Assurances by Yellowstone officials and government geologists that the ancient super-volcano beneath the park is not due to explode have actually done little to reduce fears.

Comments from a self-described survivor suggest the wildlife fleeing may be tied to “a coming eruption here at Yellowstone”.

The 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck early Sunday near the Norris Geyser Basin in the northwest of Yellowstone, which extends 3, 472 square miles of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, caused no injuries or damages and did not make any noticeable changes to the landscape, geologists said.

Though mild by seismic (地震的) standards, it was the largest to shake Yellowstone since a 4.8 quake in February 1980. “But neither the quake, the largest among hundreds that have struck the area in the last seven months, nor the uplift suggests an eruption sooner than tens of thousands of years. The chance of that happening in our lifetime is very small.” said Mr. Smith, associate director at the U. S. Geological Survey’s Volcano Science Center. He said the area of uplift that scientists had been tracking since August was rising at a rate of between 10 centimeters and 15 centimeters a year. Geologists who tracked uplift in the same area from 1996 to 2003 also saw rising seismic activity, he said.

32. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. Bison. B. Officials. C. Geologists. D. Guests.

33. We can learn from the passage that _________.

A. there have been only 2 earthquakes since 1980

B. there’s only one survivor in the Sunday earthquake

C. there’re still fears after hearing the official assurances

D. there’s an online report that bison fleeing is a natural happening

34. What’s Mr. Smith’s prediction about the volcanic eruption in Yellowstone National Park?

A. It will never happen. B. It may happen anytime.

C. It won’t happen in our lifetime D. It may happen in the next 30 years.

35. We can probably read such a passage in _________.

A. a national newspaper B.
