The West Lake （xi hu 西湖）

The West Lake Scenic Resort covers an area of 60.8 square kilometers, of which the lake area covers 5.66 square kilometers. Like a bright pearl, the West Lake is embraced by hills on its three sides, the other side is to the west of the city. The lake is divided into three sections by two man-made causeways (Bai Causeway and Su Causeway). Within the lake there are one natural island (the Solitary Hill) and three man-made islands ( Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, Mid-Lake Pavilion, Ruangong Dun). In the Southern Song Dynasty, ten of the scenic spots were chosen to be listed in the “Ten Views of the West Lake”, namely, Spring Dawn at Su Causeway, Autumn Moon on Calm Lake, Melting Snow at Broken

Bridge, Sunset at Leifeng Pagoda ( to be renovated), Late Bell at Nanping Hill, Lotus in the Breeze at Quyuan Park, Viewing Gold fish at Flowers Harbor, Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, Listening to Orioles Singing in the Willows, Twin Peaks Piercing the Clouds. The West Lake Scenic Region is home to 60 odd scenic spots and 40 odd key cultural relics under protection, coupled with beautiful legends, such as “ White Snake Lady”, “ Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai”, “Legend of Monk Jigong”, “Red Plum Pavilion” and so on. In recent years, The city has set up many museums and memorial halls around the West Lake to fully show its rich cultural contents.

The Qianjiang tidal bore is one of the wonders of the world. The special physical features of the river account for such a remarkable natural phenomenon that the outlet of Qiantang River, Hangzhou Bay, is extremely wide, forming the shape of a huge trumpet.

There are three tourist holiday zones in Hangzhou, namely: Hangzhou Zhijiang National Tourist Resort Zone, Xiaoshan Tourist Zone, and Cun`an Tourist Zone.

One Thousand Isle Lake is located in Cun`an County, covering an area of 970 sq.km. It is the largest forest park in China. Its forest coverage is 82.5% with 22 national protection specimens. Animal and plant resources are very rich, with 1,807 categories of plant, 2,079 categories of animals, of which 22 are for national protection ones. The quality of water in the lake is first class, with 7 m of visibility and can be used as drinking water without processing.

The West Tianmu Mountain is a famous national natural reserve, as well as a tourist resort and Buddhist site. It is located in Lin’an County, 1,506 meters above the sea level. There are more than 1,200 varieties of plants on the mountain; among them huge gingko, Chinese cryptomeria and golden larch are the most impressive. The dense forest is home to several hundred kinds of animals. There are 34 kinds of animals under the special protection of the state.
