It is too young to fly, and the mother bird is very worried.” “What a pity! It’ll die down there in the grass,” said the third lawyer. “It doesn’t matter. It’s only a bird,” said the second lawyer. C Within a few short years, girls in Europe have become heavier smokers than boys, for reasons experts still fail to understand, according to a British study presented last week to an international conference on smoking. Anti-smoking(反吸烟) activists at the second “Tobacco or Health” conference in the Canary Islands pointed out that while adults were giving up smoking in ever growing numbers, more and more young people were taking up the habits, particularly girls. One 15-year-old in four is a regular smoker, according to a study made in 27 countries in Europe and the United States, Canada and Israel ---by Edinburgh University together with the World Health Organization. In Western Europe, girls were more likely than boys to smoke in Germany or in England. One third of the girls were smokers compared to one in four boys. In Eastern Europe, the girls “still fall behind” those in the Western Europe but were “catching up” quickly, said the study. The study dealt with the behavior of 15-year-old in seven European countries over the four-year period. The percentages of young women smoking went from 17 percent to 36 percent in Austria, from 17 percent to 28 percent in Norway, from 21 percent to 28 percent in Hungary(匈牙利). In the seven countries and regions including Austria, Finland, Hungary, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Wales--- more girls than boys smoked, with the exception of Hungary. 11. This passage shows us such a fact that more and more _____ in Europe were giving up smoking. A. boys B. girls C. old people D. adults 12. How shall we compare the number of boy smokers with that of girl smokers? A. The number of boy smokers is larger than that of girl smokers. B. The number of boy smokers is as large as that of girl smokers. C. The number of boy smokers is as small as that of girl smokers. D. The number of boy smokers is smaller than that of girl smokers. 13. Which of the following countries is the right choice where the number of young women smokers increases fastest? A. Austria. B. Hungary. C. Norway. D. Switzerland. 14. What is the main idea of this passage? A. To report something interesting that happened in England. B. To introduce something about girl smokers in Europe. C. To describe the present condition of smokers. D. To warn young people around the world against smoking. 四、完形填空(每小题1分,共计20分) Keeping a Diary in English Our teacher asks us to keep a diary in English.
