One animal which has died out was once a kind of bird in large numbers in North America: the passenger pigeon. The passenger pigeon bred(繁殖)in the eastern part of the U.S. and Canada and often migrated(迁徙) to the southern U.S. during the winter months. The bird’s name didn’t come from the migrations but from its movements in search of food. The passenger pigeons were social birds, traveling in amazingly large numbers from millions to one or two billion. Passing overhead, a large group of birds could darken the sky like storm clouds for a period of hours.

A hundred or more pairs of pigeons often nested in the same tree, each female laying a single egg. The birds lived mainly on wild seeds and nuts, but sometimes many of them would storm down onto a field or a garden and eat everything in sight.

While large numbers of passenger pigeons were recorded in the late nineteenth century, the population decreased rapidly, and the last wild bird was shot in 1904. The sudden disappearance of the bird remains a mystery, but an explanation is found in its habit of nesting and moving in large numbers. Farmers, who considered them pests, found it easy to catch hundreds at a time in nets. Also, as passenger pigeons were tasty game birds, market hunters shot hundreds of thousands on their nesting grounds. By 1900 the passenger pigeon was already rare.

22. When did the passenger pigeon disappear completely?

C. In the late nineteenth century D. In the middle or late 1800’s

23. What was the farmers attitude towards the passenger pigeon before it died out?

A. They protected it. B. They didn’t care about it.

C. They disliked it. D. They thought highly of it.

Carol Vaness, the well-known American opera singer, was born in San Diego and began her professional performance in San Francisco. She has sung at many of the major opera houses in the world. Unlike other world-famous male opera singers (Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Marcello Giordani), she was particularly known for her Mozart operatic roles.

At the Metropolitan Opera in New York City where she often sings, Carol’s voice must be loud enough to be heard by four thousand people. It must reach every person in the theater, without a microphone, even when she’s singing softly. The reason Carol can project her voice that far is the way she breathes. “When you breathe, it’s like a swimmer taking a deep breath before going underwater,” Carol explains. “You have to take a lot of air into your lungs.” According to Carol, the main difference between pop singing and opera is “how you breathe, how much air you take in, and how you control it coming out. Regular singing is more like speaking, and it’s a lot softer.

Ever since she started piano lessons at the age of ten, Carol has loved music. As she got older, she decided to become a music teacher. When she went to college, she took singing lessons as part of her studies. Her voice teacher discovered that nineteen-year-old Carol had an exceptionally beautiful soprano(女高音) voice – the highest singing voice for women. ? Today, Carol performs throughout the United States and Europe and she has song for almost twenty years. But she has never forgotten where she started singing in the first palace. “Put your heart into your singing and enjoy it,” says Carol, “because singing is a great joy. That’s why I sing. In fact, that’s why everybody sings.”

24. What is the best title for this passage?

A. An Opera Star B. The Way an Opera Star Sings

C. Opera Singing and Pop Singing D. Singing without a Microphone

25. Which statement is true?

A. A pop singer breathes more deeply than an opera singer when he or she sings.

B. Opera singing is more like speaking.

C. A pop singer takes in much more air than an opera singer when singing.

D. An opera singer breathes differently from a pop singer when singing.

26. From the passage you can conclude all the following EXCEPT that _____.

A. Carol once learned to play the piano

B. Carol has been singing opera for 20 years or so

C. Carol worked as a music teacher

D. Carol is popular with Americans and Europeans

FUZHOU, South China, Dec. 18 (Fujian Daily) –Students of Fujian Province who date (约会) in middle school have slowly increased recently. It’s said that they have obviously worse study skills, are four times more likely to drop out of school and report twice as much alcohol and tobacco use than their single classmates, according to a new research from the University of Fuzhou. “Romantic relationships are a symbol of adolescence(青春期), but very few studies have examined how adolescents are different in the development of these relationships.” said Lin Ming, the study author and professor in the College of Public Health.

Professor Lin followed a group of 624 students over a four-year period from 9th to 12th grade. Each year, the group of students completed a survey showing whether they had dated and reported the frequency(频率) of different behaviors, including the use of alcohol and tobacco. Their teachers completed questionnaires (调查表) about the students' performance in study. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school.

“Teachers regarded the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skills,” according to the report. Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to success in study such as doing work for extra credit(学分), being well organized, finishing homework, working hard .

“Dating a classmate may have the emotional complications(复杂)” Lin said, “When the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the former-partner dating someone else. It is reasonable to think this could be linked to depression(消沉) and divert (转移) attention from studying.”

“Dating should not be considered a ceremony of growth in middle school.” Lin concluded finally.

27. According to the passage, students who date in middle school may _____.

A. enjoy better school lives

B. be more likely to hurt others

C. have poorer performances in study

D. be less likely to use alcohol and tobacco
