Our Happy Long-Break Activities

With the bell ringing, we run out of the classroom quickly, and our happy long-break activity time begins. Look! Some students are kicking shuttlecocks, skipping ropes, and turning hula hoops. Some are playing ball games. And others are performing group dancing. Even some teachers can’t help joining us. What a happy and exciting scene! Instead of repeating the previous long-break activities which was dull and boring, we can now carry on a wide variety of interesting activities freely. We can do what we like. And we can even create some new games ourselves.

I do like this kind of long-break activities. Not only can it help to build up students’ body, but also it is an effective way to promote a harmonious relationship among students and between students and teachers. It is through this kind of long-break activities that students’ awareness of cooperation, competition and communication can be improved, which is of great benefit to making our school life colorful and building up a positive schoolyard atmosphere and culture.

W: Guess what?

M: What?

W: I’ve just received a letter from English World.

M: Really? I often read that magazine. What did it say?

W: They’ve accepted my story. They’ve chosen me. I’m going to a conference in Beijing.

M: Terrific! Good for you! Have you told your parents?

W: They were happy for me. Isn’t that great? Two weeks in Beijing! And that’s not all. An iPad for myself.

M: Would you please tell me the cost per night for a single room with a bath?

W: Well, it depends on what season it is. There’s a minimum price for off-season. A single room at the moment would cost you 50 dollars. During the peak season, it is twice as much.

M: What time are meals served here?

W: Breakfast is served from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.; lunch from 12:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; and dinner from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m..

M: Oh, I just got some bad news today.

W: What happened, Terry?

M: Today the boss called me into his office and told me they had to lay me off. That means I’m out of work.

W: Oh! I am so sorry. You really liked working there.

M: Yeah, well, it’s not all bad news. There’s still a small chance that the company will call me back in the summer if the work picks up. You never know what’ll happen. They might need me then.

W: Oh, this is so sudden, isn’t it?

M: Well, sort of. Two other employees lost their jobs last month. I had a feeling I might be the next in line. You know. I’ve only been working there since last October. If they’re going to lay someone off, it’s always going to be the newer employees first.

W: Oh, what are you going to do?

M: Well, I plan to go to some interviews.

W: Holding a fashion show must be really challenging, Billy?

M: Yeah, but it’s also fun. All the clothes have to be numbered so that the models wear them in the right order. And they also have to be marked with the names of the right models.

W: It would be awkward if the clothes were worn by the wrong models.

M: More than awkward. It would be terrible. First impressions are so important. A lot of clothes are sold because they look good at the show.

W: Does everyone have to practice before a fashion show?

M: Certainly! A fashion show is more than models and clothes. Special lighting and music are also key factors during the show.

W: No wonder it always appears perfect!

M: And someone is usually there to talk about the clothes as the models are on the stage.

M: Hello, welcome to our programme, Today’s City. I’m Larry. We’re going to Louisville, Kentucky where our guest Michelle Ray comes from. She is proud of her middle-sized city with a small-town feel and big-city dreams. Now, Michelle, tell us about your city.

W: Thank you, Larry. Here is my city. Louisville is my city. The first place I take a visitor from out-of-town is to the Highlands for shopping and night life. When I have delicious Asian food I always go to the Zen Garden, which provides wonderful all-vegetable dishes.

M: Wow, that’s interesting. Many people go for healthy food now.

W: You can say that again. If I want to go camping and fishing I go to the Red River area. For complete quiet, I can hide away in my house with a good book from one of our public libraries.

M: That all sounds very exciting. I’m sure some of our listeners will include Louisville in their travel plan for their next holiday, Thank you, Michelle.

To get a driver’s license, you must take three tests. The first test is a vision test. This test checks your eyes to see if you have to wear glasses when you drive. The second test is a written test that checks your knowledge of highway and traffic regulations. You can prepare for this test by studying a booklet that you can get in the driver’s license office. After you pass the written test, you receive an instruction permit. This permit allows you to practice driving with an experienced driver. The last test you have to take is a road test. This checks your driving ability. If you pass it, you will receive your driver’s license.

When you go to the driver’s license office to take the road test, you must provide your own vehicle. First, the license examiner checks the mechanical condition of your car. Then the examiner gets into the car with you and asks you to drive in regular traffic. While you are driving, the examiner tests you for such things as starting, stopping, turning, backing up, and parking. If you can’t control the car properly, or if you break a traffic rule while you are taking the test, you fail the examination. You’ll have to continue to practice until you take the road test again and pass it.
