Ammie Reddick from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, was only 18 months old when she had the accident that had scarred(留下创伤) her for life. The curious child reached up to grab the wire of a hot kettle in the family kitchen and poured boiling water over her tiny infant frame.

Her mother Ruby turned round and, seeing Ammie horribly burnt, called an ambulance which rushed her daughter to a nearby hospital. Twenty percent of Ammie’s body had been burned and all of her burns were third-degree. There, using tissue(组织) taken from unburned areas of Ammie’s body, doctors performed complex skin transplants(移植) to close her wounds and control her injuries, an operation that took about six hours. Over the next 16 years, Ammie underwent 12 more operations to repair her body.

When she started school at Maxwelton Primary at age 4, other pupils made cruel comments or simply wouldn’t play with her. “I was the only burned child in the street, the class and the school,” she recalled, “some children refused to become friends because of that.”

Today, aged 17, Ammie can only ever remember being a burned person with scars; pain is a permanent part of her body. She still has to have two further skin transplants. Yet she is a confident, outgoing teenager who offers inspiration and hope to other young burns victims.

She is a member of the Scottish Burned Children’s Club, a charity set up last year. This month, Ammie will be joining the younger children at the Graffham Water Center in Cambridge shire for the charity’s first summer camp. “I’ll show them how to get rid of unkind stares from others.” she says. Ammie loves wearing fashionable sleeveless tops, and she plans to show the youngsters at the summer camp that they can too. “I do not go to great lengths to hide my burns scars,” she says, “I gave up wondering how other people would react years ago.”

21. What did other children do when Ammie first went to school?

A.They were friendly to her. B.They showed sympathy to her.

C.They were afraid of her. D.They looked down upon her.

22. Ammie will teach the younger children at the Graffham Water Center to___________.

A.face others’ unkindness bravely B.hide their scars by proper dressing

C.live a normal life D.recover quickly

23. What can be the best title of the passage?

A.A Seriously Burned Girl Survives B.Ways to Get Rid of Unkind Stares

C.Permanent Scars and Pain for a Girl D.A Seriously Burned Angel of Hope

Global retailers (零售商) lose nearly $ 450 billion every year as a result of out-of-stock items, empty shelves, and other human errors. So Simbe Robotics today announced its’ first product----Tally. It is the world’s first robotic autonomous shelf auditing and analytics solution.

Tally can help look for stock (库存) that is running low and stock that is nearing its sell-by-date. It can also analyze gaps in the shelves while looking for products that are in the wrong place or facing the wrong direction. Pricing errors can be found too.

“When it comes to the retail industry, shopping experience is everything. If a product is unavailable at the time the shopper wants to buy it, the retailer has missed an opportunity and disappointed the customer,” according to Brad Bogolea, CEO and co-founder of Simbe Robotics. “ Tally helps retailers address these challenges by providing more precise and timely analysis of the state of in-store goods and freeing up staff to focus on customer service.”

Tally stands 38 inches tall, and has an adjustable sensor for capturing shelf data. The overall height is variable, depending on the retailer’s shelf height requirements. Tally weighs approximately 30 lbs. and can be easily moved to anywhere within a retail store’s floor plan.

It is currently in trial with several North American retailers. If current trials of Tally show it to be genuinely effective, this clever little creation could well find its way into the stores far and wide soon.

24. What is Paragraph 1 mainly talking about?

A. The working principle of Tally. B. The necessity of inventing Tally.

C. The situation of global retailers. D. The influence of inventing Tally.

25. What can Tally do for retailers?

A. Find out best-selling items. B. Replace low-quality goods.

C. Look for misplaced items. D. Serve the shoppers.

26. Which of the following statements is not true?

A. As for retail industry, shopping experience is extremely important.

B. Tally can help retailers solve some challenges.

C. The retailer will lose nothing if the product the shopper wants to purchase is not available.

D. Tally’s height can be adjusted.

27. What can be inferred from the text about Tally?

A. It needs to be improved further.

B. It can be used to train employees.

C. It can replace the shop-assistants entirely.

D. It won’t take long to be widely used after it proves effective.

A survey revealed the average Asian dad spent one minute a day with his children. I was shocked. I mean, a whole minute? Every day? Get real. Once a week maybe. The fact is, many Asian males are terrible at kid-related things. Actually, I am one of them.

Child-rearing(养育) doesn’t come naturally to guys. My mother knew the names of our teachers, best friends and crushes. My dad was only vaguely aware there were short people sharing the apartment. My mother bought healthy fresh food at the market every day. My dad would only go shopping when there was nothing in the fridge except a jar of capers and a bay leaf. Then he’d buy beer. My mother always knew the right questions to ask our teachers. My dad would ask my English teacher if she could get us a discount on school fees. My mother served kid food to kids. My dad added chili sauce to everything, including our baby food.

The truth is, mothers have superpowers. My son fell off a wall once and hurt himself all over. I demanded someone bring me a computer so I could google what to do. My wife ignored me and did some sort of chanting phrase such as “Mummy kiss it better,” and cured 17 separate injuries in less than 15 seconds.

Yes, mothers are incredible people, but they are not always right. Yet honesty forces me to record the fact that mothers only know best 99.99 per cent of the time. Here are some famous slip-ups.

The mother of Bill Gates: “If you’re going to drop out of college and hang out with your nerdy friends, don’t come running to me when you find yourself penniless. ” The mother of Albert Einstein:“When you grow up, you’ll
