It was reported that a London receptionist was sent home from work after refusing to wear high heels.Temporary worker Nicola Thorp,27,from Hackney ,arrived at finance company PwC to be told she had to wear shoes with a“2in to 4in heel”.When she refused and complained male colleagues were not asked to do the same, she was sent home without pay.

Ms Thorp said she would not bear wearing high heels for a whole day and would prefer to wear her smart flat shoes. But she was told she should go and buy a pair of heels on her first day.

I said if you can give me a reason as to why wearing flats would impair me to do my job today ,then fair enough ,but they couldn’t,Ms Thorp told BBC.

“I was expected to do a nine—hour shift 0n my feet guiding clients to meeting rooms,1 said I just won’t be able to do that in heels’.”Ms Thorp said she asked if a man would be expected to do the same shift in heels, and was laughed. She then spoke to friends about what had happened, and after posting on Facebook she realized that other women had found themselves in the same position.

She has since set up a petition calling for the law to be changed so women cannot be forced to wear high heels to work.It has had more than 10,000 signatures,so the government will now have to respond. As the law stands, employers can dismiss staff who fail to live up to“ reasonable ”dress code demands, as long as they’ve been given enough time to buy the right shoes and clothes. They call to set up different codes for men and women,as long as there’s an “equivalent(等效) level of smartness”.

25.What happened to Nicola Thorp on her first day to work?

A. She bought a new pair of high—heel shoes.

B.She was exhausted after a long day’s work.

C.She was finally allowed to wear flat shoes at work.

D.She was fired for refusing to wear proper shoes.

26.Which word would Ms Thorp rise to describe the dress code?

A.Necessary. B.Understandable. C.Unreasonable.D. Unavoidable.

27.We can infer from the text that__________.

A.the shoe problem only happens in PwC

B.there is sexual discrimination on the issue

C.the company will give in to public pressure

D.Nicola Thorp would go back to work soon

28.According to the last paragraph,____________

A.the government will make some response to the issue.

B.the petition has not caught much attention so far.

C.it is illegal to set up the same codes for men and women.

D.employers have the right to fire those who are not smart.

If you thought running was just great for the body;then think again.Scientists have uncovered evidence the sport not only keeps people slim but also boosts brain power.

The research found that people who keep fit are more likely to have larger brains, better memories and clearer thinking. They also found that unfit people tended to have smaller brains and reduced cognitive(认知的)skills,The findings add to a growing body of evidence which links exercise with helping protect the brain against ageing and also aiding it replace dying cells. This might reduce the risk of debilitating illnesses and diseases such as Alzheimer’s。

One research paper within its latest issue sees scientists at Kentucky University putting 30 adults aged 59—69 on a treadmil1.Their heart and lung capacity was measured and an MRI scanner was used to assess the blood flow to their brains. Those who were less fit had smaller brains compared to the fitter volunteers who had larger brains.

Scientists in Germany followed 21 adults aged between 60—77.As they went through a three-month fitness program they saw improvements in their memory.Researchers are not yet sure why exercise helps to protect brain cells but some research in mice has produced results.

Mice, examined at the National Institute on Ageing,in Baltimore, found that cells in the hippocampus,an area of the brain used for memory were actively reproducing while their fatter peers were in decline.

Linda Clare, professor of Clinical psychology of ageing and dementia at Exeter University and a member of the Global Council on Brain health told
