第I卷

第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)

第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

The London Eye 4D Film Experience started in August and is included in the London Eye ticket price. It is a fantastic 4D film to entertain you before your trip on the London Eye. The 4D effects are great.

No Extra Cost to You

That’s right; you buy your ticket for the London Eye and 4D cinema experience. Merlin Entertainments, the London Eye owners, spent 5 million creating the film and building the 4D cinema and wanted to improve the value for money of the London Eye.

What to Expect

The 4D Cinema entrance is in the ticket hall. So after buying your ticket, go straight to it, where you’ll be given a pair of glasses. About 160 visitors will pass through the 4D cinema every 8 minutes so don’t worry about waiting time. People in the bright pink cinema are all standing on four levels. The top level is designed for wheelchairs.

London Eye 4D Film

Put on your glasses and enjoy yourself. The story is about a little girl visiting London with her father and she wants to be higher to get a better view so she comes to the London Eye. It differs from watching the 3D film for all your senses are involved. When it snows on screen, you feel it snows in the cinema. And when you watch the fireworks, you can really smell them.

For a short film, less than four minutes, before the main attraction you think you’ve come for, you are going to love this free extra. I stood there with my mouth wide open at the end as many others did. It’s fantastic! The effects are the Hollywood standard as no expense is spared. I was lucky enough to try the film three times on the first day and I still want to go back again.

We took a rare family road trip to the Adirondacks in late August, and it was as refreshing and exhausting as family vacations tend to be.Toward the end of our long drive home, even the kids were leaning forward in their seats urging my lead foot on.At that point in a road trip, even sixty-five miles per hour feels slow. We have become numb to our speed and numb to the road signs flashing by.

My family lives on the edge of Lancaster County. Only thirty miles from home,I hit the brakes, and we began to roll, slowly, behind a horse-drawn carriage. We began to open our eyes again. We saw familiar green hills and the farm with the best watermelons. I rolled down the windows, and we breathed again.Just-cut hay and a barn full of dairy cattle.

At five miles per hour, you remember what you forget at sixty-five.You are thinking about a place, even when you are moving from place to place.

I am a placemaker. A homemaker, too. I am a mother of a young kid at home, and also a writer and a gardener. But,for me,those roles are wrapped up with the one big thing I want to do with the rest of my life:I want to cultivate a place and share it with others.

The place I make with my family is a red-brick farmhouse built in l880. It has quite a few nineteenth-century bedrooms and a few acres of land, and we love nothing more than to fill them with neighbors and friends. We grow vegetables and flowers, keep a baker’s dozen of egg—laying chickens, and, since we moved in three years ago,we have planted many, many trees.

Living with my life’s purpose does not allow for much travel. I need to be here, feeding the chickens and watering the tomatoes. Any extra in the budget, and we spend it on trees.

But I learned something at the end of our family road trip.Travel can help me in the task of caring for my own place. When I slow down and pay attention to the road between here and there, travel tells me the connections between my place and all the other places.

5. What does the author try to express in the first paragraph?

A.The tiredness of her past family life.

B.Her disappointment at the family road trip.

C.The family’s eagerness to return home.

D.Kids’excitement at driving fast on the road.

6. Why did the author slow her car some miles from her home?

A.Because she made a way for a horse-drawn carriage.

B.Because she enjoyed the scenery along the road.

C.Because she needed a break after the long drive.

D.Because she wanted to get rid of a fast-paced life.

7. The underlined word“placemaker’’in the 4th paragraph refers to someone who .

A.devotes most of his energy and time to building his house

B.is ready to help anyone in need in the community

C.makes a creative design for others’ houses

D.is good at cultivating a place and sharing it with others

8. What can be the best title of the passage?

A.On the Way Home B.Never Travel again

C.Escape from a Family Life D.Life on the Farm

We can stay young forever. That is the message Dr. Shen Ziyin wants to give the world. And the Chinese doctor claims that he has found an answer to the problems of aging.

His solution is a herbal medicine to slow the process of aging.

Dr. Shen Ziyin has been trained in Western medicine. At the same time he studied traditional Chinese medicine. And, he has been working for the past forty years to put together the best of both and find a cure for aging. He has taken a hint from the ancient Chinese medicine system called “shen”.

According to Shen, it is the kidney which adjusts the functioning of the body as well as its aging process. It is responsible for the level of activity that the human bodies go through. Studies conducted by Dr. Shen show that herbal medicine based on the shen system slow the aging process, says a report in The Telegraph newspaper.

We notice that when people grow old, they have reduced strength, loss of hair, backache, weakness in general, and wrinkles, among others. This happens because when people grow old, their bodies produce T-cells. These T-cells contain a particular substance called Fas. Fas makes the cells in the body destruct themselves.

So the only way to slow down aging is to slow the production of T-cells in the body. This can happen if people eat low calorie food. Then the body is not active enough to produce extra T-cells. But, is going hungry all the time a good price to pay for staying young?

This is where Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine comes in. But how effective it will be, only time can tell.

9. How did Dr. Shen find the solution to the problem of aging?

A. By studying Western medicine.

B. By learning traditional Chinese medicine.

C. By doing research on both Western and Chinese people.

D. By combining both Western and Chinese medicine.

10. What plays the most important role in keeping people young according to Shen?

A. Medical treatment. B. People’s good kidney.

C. Level of people’s activity. D. Positive life attitude.

11. The reason why people become old is that _________.

A. their bodies are unable to fight diseases

B. their bodies produce T-cells

C. they have reduced strength, loss of hair

D. they become weaker and weaker

12. We can probably learn from the passage that _________.

A. people should try to quicken the production of T-cells in the body

B. the more Chinese herbal medicine people drink, the better for health

C. it remains unknown how effective Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine is

D. producing more low calorie food allows people to keep young

D

At most schools, “going green” means generating less trash or making an attempt to recycle. But at New York’s Riverdale Country School, it means being encouraged to run and even jump in the hallway. That’s because the school was the first to install ( 安装 ) the specially-designed Pavegen floor tiles (地砖) in America.

The tiles use kinetic energy (动能) expanded by the kids and transform it into electricity that can be used to power classroom lights, science projects and charge electronic devices. The first US installation of Pavegen tiles near the school’s student center is thanks to 14-year-old Zach Halem, who managed to convince the officials to purchase them.

Besides providing fun green energy, the tiles also serve as a learning tool. Every time a student steps on one, a brightly-lit LED board provides instant feedback (反馈信息) on how much energy was generated. Depending on the force, every step results in between one to seven watts-enough power to light an LED street lamp for about 30 seconds.

Made largely from rubber and other recycled materials the tiles are invented by the 26-year-old British industrial designer Laurence Kembell-Cook. While new to the US, they have been installed in numerous places in Europe, ranging from a London underground station to a marathon track in Paris. However, it was not until Pavegen started getting popular in London schools that Laurence realized that his invention not only saved energy, but was also fun!

Though the young inventor will not give too many details about the technology behind this green tile, he says that it is very different from other kinetic energy harvesting systems.

Whatever the secret, let’s hope more US schools decide to install these fun tiles. In fact, why stop
