III. Presentation
Read the introduction aloud. Books closed.
Say :now listen to the dialogue and find
out the following information.
1. Why did Mr Ball call on Mrs Zhu?
2. Where does Dr Zhang come from?
3. What is the message in the conversation?
4. How much do you know about Dr Zhang?
Let the students answer the questions
in pairs.
Answers:
1.To give her a message about the date
for the conference.
2.He comes from Guangzhou.
3.The message is that the conference
has been delayed until 15th and 16th.
Then play the tape again, collect answers
from the class. Ask some students to answer
the fourth question.
Answer 4: He lives in Guangzhou, is on
a visit to Beijing, has some personal
affairs to see to, is visiting some relatives.
IV. Dialogue
Play the tape of the dialogue for the
students to listen and follow. Go through
the dialogue briefly and make sure the
students understand it.
V. Practice
1. Ask some students to repeat the dialogue.
Then let the students practise the dialogue
in pairs/threes/small groups. Ask one
pair to act the scene in front of the
class.
2. Explain the useful expressions. eg.
Call on sb. , have a seat, see to
Mean to , personal affairs
3. Ask some students to make sentences
with the useful expressions.
VI. Practice
Read through the phrases with students.
Then books shut. Do a repetition drill
with the class, paying particular attention
to intention. Books open. Ask students
to give short example sentences with “It’s
time I …”. Then let the students practise
this in pairs. Ask some students to give
short sentences with the rest other. Get
them to act out their dialogue in front
of the class.

Introduce the writer Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle 柯南道尔爵士(1859-1930)。美国医生及侦探小说家。
Then ask students the questions:

2. Have you ever read detective stories
about Sherlock Holmes?
At last, tell them to look at the picture
of Lesson 58. . Talk about the picture.
