Unit 18 Office equipment
教学设计方案Lesson 69
Step 1 Revision
1 Check the homework exercises, especially
Wb Lesson 68, Ex. 3.
2 To revise the function of asking
for permission, write up on the Bb these
cues use / borrow / take / look at / watch
/ listen to / shut / open / turn up /
turn down. Then let the Ss work in groups
of four, with their books shut.
Step 2 Presentation
SB Page 31, Part 1. Write the topic
of the lesson up on the Bb: The Office.
Ask the class what pieces of equipment
they might expect to find in a large modern
office. Write this list on the Bb. If
Ss suggest items that the class does not
understand, ask them to explain. Write
any useful notes and key words that arise
out of this discussion on the Bb. Get
Ss to talk about the pictures and describe
what they can see.
Step 3 Reading for general understanding
Read aloud the task and explain what
Ss have to do. Allow the Ss enough time
to read the text and write down the headings
above the right sections of the text.
Let them compare.
Step 4 Reading
SB Page 32, Part 2. Let the Ss read
the whole passage carefully and discuss
the questions, working in pairs or small
groups. Check the answers with the whole
class.
Step 5 Reading aloud
Speech Cassette Lesson 69. Play the
tape of the passage for the Ss to listen
and follow. Play the tape of part of the
passage once more; this time the Ss listen
and repeat. Pay attention to stress and
intonation, and the sentence stress of
longer sentences.
Step 6 Workbook
Wb Lesson 69, Exx. 1-2.
Allow the Ss enough time to go over
Ex. 1. Then collect the answers in class.
Ss should say complete sentences.
Read each sentence in Ex. 2 and put
it into Chinese. Then identify the meanings
of the bold words.
Homework
Read the passage again.
Finish off the Workbook exercises.
教学设计方案Lesson 70
Step 1 Revision
1 Check the homework exercises.
2 Get Ss to tell each other either
the story of Fred Pearson, or to tell
each other some of the reasons for taking
a part-time job.
Step 2 Presentation
SB Page 33, Part 1. Get Ss to talk about
the picture and describe what they can
see, Ask Ss to list some of the gases
in the air we breathe. In this way, you
can teach the key-word oxygen. Write compressed
air on the Bb and teach the meaning. (Air
is compressed by a machine and supplied
under pressure through a pipe to machines.)
Step 3 Reading for general understanding
Read aloud the two comprehension questions.
Allow the Ss enough time to read the text
and write down the answers. Put them in
pairs to discuss their answers, then check
the answers with the class. (1 In a ship
which was in a port in Scotland for repairs.
2 A worker fixed the air-line to a supply
of oxygen instead of compressed air.)
Step 4 Reading
Wb Lesson 70, Ex. 1. Go through the
exercise and make sure the Ss know what
to do. Let them read the whole passage
carefully and answer thequestions, working
in pairs or small groups. Check the answers
with the whole class. This is a good time
to deal with any language problems.
Step 5 Problem solving
SB Page 34, Part 2. Get the Ss to do
the task in pairs. See which pair of Ss
can find out the correct answer before
the others. (The man actually connected
the air-line to the oxygen supply line.

pairs.
Step 7 Reading aloud
Speech Cassette Lesson 70. Play the
tape of the passage for the Ss to listen
and follow. Play the tape of part of the
passage once more; this time the Ss listen
and repeat. Pay attention to stress and
intonation, and the sentence stress of
longer sentences.
Step 8 Workbook
Wb Lesson 70, Exx. 1-3.
Give the Ss some time to think about
the questions in Ex. 1 and decide which
answers to choose. Then check the answers
with the whole class.
Ex. 2 revises verbal phrases. Let Ss
work in pairs first. Then call out some
Ss to give the complete sentences and
put them into Chinese.
For Ex. 3, get Ss to do it in pairs
first and then check the answers with
the whole class.

the story.
Finish off the Workbook exercises.
教学设计方案Lesson 71
Step 1 Revision
1 Check the homework exercises.
2 Get Ss to work in pairs and tell
each other the story of the fire from
the previous lesson. One S starts, then
the second continues and so on.
Step 2 Grammar study
SB Page 35, Part 1. Go through the Grammar
study section with the class, getting
students to translate the sentences. Do
not spend time revising the simpler structures,
as students should know these. Draw attention
to any difficult points suggested below.
If students have difficulty, do not spend
too much time explaining. Instead, prepare
a short revision exercise and produce
it in class when you revise the grammatical
category in the next lesson.
Step 3 Grammar study
SB Page 35, Part 2. Get Ss to do this
task as homework. It is good enough to
underline all the-ing forms and “to +
infinitive” forms. Do not spend much time
analysing every sentence containing these
forms.
Step 4 Grammar practice
SB Page 35, Part 3. Do the first sentence
orally with the whole class, then let
the Ss work through the exercise in pairs.
Check the answers at the end. Answers:
to speak; to pay; trying; to run; trying;
to make; to take; to suggest; to pay;
working; to do; working; to get; taking;
studying; to do; to try; studying
Step 5 Workbook
Wb Lesson 71, Exx. 1 and 2.
Allow the Ss some time to go over the
sentences in Ex. 1 and do it independently.
Then check the answers with the whole
class. Translate the sentences if necessary.
Get the Ss to work on Ex. 2 in pairs.
They may fill in the blanks without looking
at the verbs in the box. Compare the answers
with the whole class.
If time permits, take up Ex. 3.
Homework
Finish off the Workbook exercises.
教学设计方案Lesson 72

to some telephone messages. Then read
the introduction aloud and read through
the task in Ex. 1 and make sure the Ss
understand what to do.

let Ss discuss their answers in pairs.
Play the tape again if necessary, then
check the answers with the whole class.
Step 4 Speaking
SB Page 3G, Part 2. Check the forms:
go through the expressions and check that
Ss know how to form complete sentences.
Ask Ss to complete the expressions given
in this part.
Demonstrate both phone dialogues yourself,
taking all the roles.
Dialogue 1:
A: Hello.
B: Hello. Could I speak to June, please?
A: Hold on, please.
C: Hello, this is June speaking.
B: Hi, June. This is Bob. I called to
say that we need some more park benches.
Can you send us the latest information
on them?
C: No problem.
B: Thanks. And can you give a message
to Greg, please? Just tell him that I
can't come to the meeting next Monday.
Thanks.
Dialogue 2:
A: Hello.
B: Hello. Can I speak to Mei Ge, please?
A: I'm sorry, she's not in today. Can
I take a message?
B: Yes, please. Can you ask her to ring
me, please? My name's Dick and she's got
my number. Thanks.
Get the Ss to have phone conversations
using the situations given in this part.
Get them to change partners and to repeat
this activity.
Step 5 Workbook
Wb Lesson 72, Exx. 1-2.
Get the Ss to go over the sentences
given for the dialogues in Ex. 1. Leave
them enough time to work out the answers
in pairs. Then call out some pairs of
Ss to read aloud their dialogues.
Form the class into groups of four. They
may discuss the topic orally. Then write
a draft based on the notes. Ask some Ss
to read out their letters. Make comments.
Ss may finish writing the letter after
class.
Step 6 Checkpoint
Spend as much time as necessary revising
the language points in Checkpoints 13-18.
Deal with any problems that the Ss wish
to raise.
Step 7 Test
Give your Ss a test on the language
points covered in the first half of this
book (Units 13-18). You can also give
them this test on the -ing form and the
Infinitive, if you wish.
Step 8 Writing
SB Page 36, Part 3. The aim of this
writing task is to practise writing a
business letter. Prepare for the writing
task in the following way. Put up the
format for a personal letter on the Bb.

for a business letter, asking them to
refer to the letter in Part 3.
1 Write the name of the person and
address of the company to whom you are
writing on the left, above Dear….
2 Mention the date of their letter
to which you are replying.
3 Use Dear Mr / Ms… + Yours sincerely,
4 Use Dear Sir / Madam, (if you do
not know the person by name).
Get Ss to practise orally in pairs or
small groups before writing the letter,
