Knowing how much her own children loved presents at Christmas, Ann Sutton always tried to seek help for one or two poor families. With a social worker mother, the Sutton children had inherited(继承)her commitment to service, and knew never to take their good fortune at Christmas for granted. This year, Kinzie, her seven-year-old daughter was thrilled that Santa Claus would make a special visit to a 22-year-old mother named Ashley who worked in a factory raising her 12-month-old son by herself.

The phone rang on Sunday. A representative from a local organization was calling to say that the aid Ann had requested for Ashley had fallen through. No Santa Claus, no presents, nothing.

Ann saw the cheer fade away from her children's faces at the news. Without a word, Kinzie ran into her bedroom. She returned, her face set with determination. Opening up her piggy bank, she put all the coins onto the table:? $3.30.Everything she had.

“Mom,”she told Ann,“I know it's not much. But maybe this will buy a present for the baby.”

At a breakfast meeting the next day, Ann told her coworkers about her daughter story. To her surprise, staff members began to open their purses, and empty their pockets to help Kinzie.

On Christmas Eve, Ann drove through the pouring rain to the small trailer where the Ashley’s lived. Then she began to unload the gifts from the car, handing them to Ashley one by one.

Ashley was very moved. Reflecting on a little girl's generosity, Ashley says she'll one day be able to do something similar for someone else in need.“Kinzie could have used that money for herself, but she gave it away,”Ashley says.“She's the type of kid I'd like my son to?grow up to be.”

It was graduation day at Etihad Training Academy, where the national airline of the United Arab Emirates holds a seven-week training course for new flight attendants.

Despite her obvious pride, Ms. Fathi,a 22-year-old from Egypt, was amazed to find herself here.“I never in my life thought I’d work abroad,” said Ms. Fathi, who was a university student in Cairo when she began noticing newspaper advertisements employing young Egyptians to work at airlines based in the Persian Gulf.

Twenty years ago, unmarried Arab women like Ms.Fathi, working outside their home countries, were rare. But just as young men from poor Arab nations poured into the oil-rich Persian Gulf states for jobs, more young women are doing so.

Flight attendants have become the public face of the new mobility for some young Arab women, just as they were the face of new freedoms for women in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s.They have become a subject of social anxiety and fascination in much the same way.

For many families, allowing a daughter to work may call her virtue into question.Yet this culture is changing, said Musa Shteiwi,a sociologist at Jordan University in Amman.“We’re noticing more and more single women going to the gulf these days,” he said.“It’s still not exactly common, but over the last four or five years it’s become quite an observable phenomenon.”

Many of the young Arab women working in the Persian Gulf take delight in their status as pioneers, role models for their friends and younger female relatives. Young women brought up in a culture that highly values community, have learned to see themselves as individuals. The experience of living independently and working hard for high salaries has forever changed their beliefs about themselves, though it can also lead to a painful sense of separation from their home countries and their families.

—From New York Times (December 22,2014)

The World Health Organization says there has been a sharp increase in the number of over-weight children in developing countries. In African countries, the WHO says the number of over-weight or obese children is twice as high as it was 20 years ago. Around the world, about 43 million children under the age of five were overweight in 2013.

Overweight and obese children are more likely to become overweight and obese adults. The condition can generate serious health problems like heart diseases.

Francesco Branca is the director of the WHO Department of Nutrition for Health and Development. He says urban lifestyle makes people eat processed food more often, which has a high sugar, fat and salt content. He also says people are gaining weight because of their lack of activities. They travel in cars or other vehicles more than on foot.

The WHO experts say to lower obesity rates is especially complex in countries that also deal with high rates of infectious diseases.

The WHO has some basic solutions for individuals and countries. The organization says you should lower your intake of fat, sugar, salt and processed food and eat more fruits, vegetables and increase physical activity. The WHO says these actions are especially important for children.

And WHO expert Branca says mothers should breastfeed their babies for at least the first six months of life, if possible.More importantly, governments should consider providing vitamins for children and educational campaigns about problems linked to obesity would also help. In his view, government policies should deal with how food is marketed to children and food producers must balance quality and taste with the dangers of sugar, fat and salt. "Reducing the number of overweight children will not be easy. The goal is difficult to meet even in wealthy countries." he adds. 9.What is the main idea of Paragraph l? A.Overweight children in developing countries have increased greatly. B.Children in developing countries generally weigh too much. C.The number of overweight children in the world has doubled. D.The World Health Organization has increased greatly. 10.According to Branca, people are becoming overweight because of their changes in_______. A.school education B.transportation C.physical condition D.lifestyles 11.The underlined word “generate” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______. A.cure B.cause C.worsen D.prevent 12.We can learn from the last paragraph that ______. A.babies breastfed aren’t likely to become overweight B.food producers should be stopped from marketing food to children C.governments should play a necessary role in fighting obesity D.the number of overweight children decreases easily in wealthy countries
